U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.72%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil&Gas, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.72%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.47%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.16%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 2.46% or 5.22 points to trade at 216.97 at the close. Meanwhile, UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 2.44% or 11.18 points to end at 469.67 and Merck&Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) was up 0.84% or 0.92 points to 110.24 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which fell 3.77% or 1.37 points to trade at 35.00 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 3.57% or 4.05 points to end at 109.54 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was down 3.46% or 7.62 points to 212.37.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which rose 7.89% to 128.84, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was up 5.34% to settle at 274.45 and PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which gained 3.70% to close at 68.89.

The worst performers were SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which was down 7.71% to 255.36 in late trade, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which lost 5.40% to settle at 171.99 and Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which was down 4.77% to 12.19 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were VCI Global Ltd (NASDAQ:VCIG) which rose 156.18% to 7.25, Evelo Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:EVLO) which was up 46.42% to settle at 0.18 and Dice Therapeutics (NASDAQ:DICE) which gained 37.19% to close at 46.44.

The worst performers were Surgalign Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SRGA) which was down 81.97% to 0.22 in late trade, Dragonfly Energy Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:DFLI) which lost 46.24% to settle at 1.50 and Hitek Global (NASDAQ:HKIT) which was down 40.18% to 6.03 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2024 to 952 and 67 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2228 fell and 1358 advanced, while 112 ended unchanged.

Shares in Surgalign Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SRGA) fell to all time lows; down 81.97% or 1.00 to 0.22. Shares in Dragonfly Energy Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:DFLI) fell to all time lows; down 46.24% or 1.29 to 1.50. Shares in Dice Therapeutics (NASDAQ:DICE) rose to all time highs; gaining 37.19% or 12.59 to 46.44.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.18% to 13.88.

Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.16% or 22.85 to $1,948.35 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.95% or 0.68 to hit $71.25 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.26% or 0.20 to trade at $75.89 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.04% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.44% to 141.37.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.27% at 102.11.
