The Albanese government has delayed the full release of a report that recommends it impose a carbon levy on some imported commodities amid sensitivities over US-led trade and tariff negotiations and a global slowdown in climate policy ambition.
The report, known as the carbon leakage review, was commissioned by Labor in 2023 to assess whether it could use trade levies to protect industries that are subject to carbon reduction policies and compete with products from countries without similar constraints.
