U.S. stocks opened higher on Thursday as shares of Nvidia Corp., the world’s most valuable company, shrugged off premarket losses and traded higher.
The latest batch of weekly jobless claims showed that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell to the lowest level in seven months, adding to a sense of optimism about the strength of the U.S. economy.
The S&P 500 was up 20 points, or 0.3%, at 5,936.
The Dow was up 100 points, or 0.2%, at 43,494.
The Nasdaq Composite had gained 23 points, or 0.1%, at 18,996.
Nvidia Corp. was up 1.5%, to $148 a share.
