The S&P 500 was down 0.1% on Tuesday, while the Dow was down 100 points, or 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite was up 0.1%.
In the absence of major news events, traders were fairly quiet. Total composite volume through 2 p.m. ET was down to 7.88 billion shares compared to 7.92 billion through 2 p.m. ET on Monday. The average so far this year is 9.58 billion shares traded through 2 p.m. ET, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
