Two Oklahomans were among the highest-paid chief executives at S&P 500 companies in 2022, according to the 2023 Equilar/Associated Press CEO Pay Study.
Alphabet Inc., the multinational technology conglomerate and parent company of Google, had the highest-paid S&P 500 CEO in 2022. Sundar Pichai made nearly $226 million from his total compensation package, according to the annual report on S&P 500 CEOs who have served in their roles for at least two years.
Oklahoma had two CEOs listed:
• The Williams Cos. Inc. CEO Alan S. Armstrong was listed, with a total compensation package of $13,887,596. Williams is an energy company based in Tulsa. Its core business is natural gas processing and transportation, with additional petroleum and electricity generation assets.
• Paycom founder and CEO Chad Richison also was included, with a total compensation package of $3,138,418. Paycom Software, known simply as Paycom, is an online payroll and human resource technology provider based in Oklahoma City with offices throughout the United States. It is attributed with being one of the first fully online payroll providers.
Here are some notable statistics from the 2023 study:
• Median total compensation for S&P 500 CEOs was $14.8 million, up 0.9% from 2021.
• The 0.9% raise was the smallest year-over-year increase for S&P 500 CEOs since 2015.
• Indiana was the top state for median CEO pay at $20.9 million, followed by Virginia at $20.7 million and New York at $19 million.
• CEO pay vs. typical worker pay at a company was 669 times the median salary.

The businesses on the S&P 500 make up more than 80% of the value of all stock on American exchanges. For 13 years, Equilar has partnered with the AP on annual CEO pay studies.
