Dan’s Daily: Goalie Trade, First Acquitted to Sign, All Penguins Analysis

view original post

The Pittsburgh Penguins roster of NHL hopefuls largely outplayed and beat an NHL roster for the second straight game, and PHN was in the barn in Buffalo for the full story as some prospects’ chances rose, while others fell. Elsewhere in the Daily, the Edmonton Oilers acquired a goalie, the first of the acquitted Team Canada players is reportedly about to sign an NHL contract, TSN put Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas on their “under pressure” list, and the New Jersey Devils splashed the cash on Jack Hughes.

The Daily is a little late today. The Penguins’ postgame video took a little while to complete (if you watch it, you’ll see one reason), and I could swear the universe added 50 miles to the journey. This writer needed at least 3.5 hours of sleep because there is a Penguins practice this morning–the camp will officially be down to two groups.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: First, we’ll set the table for just what the final two preseason games mean for the players and the franchise. There was and is plenty at stake for the Penguins roster.

And the full report card. As a reminder, I hate your favorite player and know nothing about hockey. I simply look at social media and take the opposite opinion purely for clicks and attention. I don’t watch the games, nor do I care to pay attention. With that disclaimer (I kid, I kid), here’s who seized their final chance and who slipped in the Penguins report card.

Also, there is a rare Penguins Live Chat tonight at 6 p.m.

Steelers Now: The Steelers need some help (or a lot?) at wide receiver. Alan Saunders scoured the NFL for Steelers trade targets.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

The Athletic ($): The Edmonton Oilers finally acquired another goalie. Connor Ingram is healthy and ready to resume his career. Here’s the nuts and bolts of the trade with the Utah Mammoth and how it could pay off.

I’ve long thought Ingram had more to give. Now we’ll see. Also, there’s a hockey bag manufacturer now suing the Mammoth for name infringement.

Sportsnet: The six NHL GMs under pressure this season, and yes, the folks up north put Kyle Dubas on the list.

I don’t think Dubas is under too much pressure because I think ownership is giving him time and space. However, this is season three, and there needs to be clarity soon, or he goes from not under pressure to hot seat in a blink.

TSN: The first of the five acquitted Team Canada players is about ready to put pen to paper. Chris Johnston broke the news that the Vegas Golden Knights and Carter Hart are within days of signing.

Philly Hockey Now: The cross-state rivals are facing a roster construction debate. Two extra forwards or two extra defensemen? The Philadelphia Flyers conundrum.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Show me the money! After Kirill Kaprizov broke the market, the New Jersey Devils were the first to capitulate, but their mega deal with Jack Hughes raises questions.

Detroit Hockey Now: We don’t tout our Hall of Famers enough. Both of our Detroit peeps are enshrined: Kevin Allen in the Hockey Hall and Bob Duff in Windsor. So, when they speak, we listen. It’s a big year in Motown, and here’s what we know and don’t know about this year’s Detroit Red Wings.
