Houston tops all other US metros as leading exporter — and it's not even close

Houston exported $180.9 billion worth of goods in 2024, up 3.1% over the previous year.

HOUSTON — Houston was No. 1 nationwide for goods exported in 2024, with a total value of $180.9 billion — more than the value of New York and Los Angeles combined.

That’s according to the Greater Houston Partnership’s new Global Houston report for 2025, which analyzed export and trade data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Houston has taken the top spot for 12 out of the past 13 years, per the GHP.

Houston’s export value is up 3.1% year over year and up $51.3 billion, or nearly 40%, from 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic, the GHP found.

The Houston-Galveston Customs District set records in 2024, handling 432.6 million metric tons of goods and commodities. The figure was a 6.6% increase from 2023 and ranked the region No. 1 nationally. Total trade value of those goods and commodities stands at $376.3 billion.

Despite economic headwinds in 2025, Houston is strategically situated to respond — even benefit — from the upheaval around policy changes.
